Michelin North America is recalling 1.2 million of its car
tires for a defect that could cause tread separation.
The tires, which
were manufactured from Jan. 10, 2010 through June 23, 2012, were
considered replacement tires for large pickup trucks as well as for some
commercial light trucks, full-sized heavy duty vans and small
recreational vehicles.
The tires also were used as original
equipment on the Ford 2010 through 2013 model-year E-Series van,
according to industry publication Automotive News. The Ford E-Series is a
commercial van that is commonly used to transport small groups of
passengers, such as for airport shuttles and sometimes in place of
school buses.
The recall has been issued as a precaution due to
reports that Michelin has received from consumers, though no injuries
have been reported.
Tread separation is a serious issue because it
typically leads to the tire rapidly losing air, which can result in the
driver losing control of the car and possibly crashing. Car crashes
cause vehicle damage and potential injury to the occupants, and also can
have the residual effect of increased car insurance rates if the accident is deemed the driver's fault.
Tires
affected by the recall are Michelin LTX M/S 225/75R16 115/112R LRE that
also have the Department of Transportation Sequence "B3JH AKEX"
followed by a four-digit date production code between 0210 (second week
of 2010) and 2512 (25th week of 2012).
